Just Back From: Malta and Gozo

One of the many little harbors in It-Tlett Ibliet (The Three Cities), Malta

Malta is a beautiful Mediterranean island nation known for its rich history, stunning architecture, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant culture.

Overview

Inhabited for thousands of years, Malta beautifully crafts evidence of historic immigration and rule by the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Sicilians, French and British, among others.

The capital city of Valetta is a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to upscale shopping, fabulous restaurants, and the stunning St. John's Co-Cathedral. Mdina, the "Silent City," is an ancient and also the site of ‘Kings Landing’ in the Game of Thrones series. St. Julian is known for beaches like Balluta Bay, a rocky stretch with a promenade and restaurants, and for the bars and nightclubs which line the streets of Paceville, an area south of St. George’s Bay Beach.

Gozo is Malta's sister island which offers a more relaxed atmosphere, with beautiful beaches, scenic countryside. It’s known for its Neolithic Ġgantija Temple ruins, rural hiking paths, beaches and scuba-diving sites.

Must see sites include the stunning sea caves and crystal-clear waters that is Malta’s Blue Grotto; the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples, which are some of the world's oldest freestanding structures; or any one of the 365 churches located in proud little villages sprinkled throughout the island, each with their own flavors and appeals.

The Maltese are by and large known for their friendliness and hospitality. I certainly can attest to that. English is widely spoken on the islands and many speak Italian as a third language. The Maltese have a strong sense of community and crime rates are among the lowest in the world.

Food and Wine

Malta is enjoying a burgeoning culinary scene, including fine dining at Michelin-starred restaurants like De Mondion, Under Grain, and Noni. In addition, you can explore local seafood and Mediterranean cuisine at waterfront restaurants like the Chop House, with excellent food and a spectacular view of Valetta. And, don't forget to try traditional Maltese dishes like fenkata (rabbit stew) and pastizzi (stuffed pastry).

One of the biggest surprises to me was the outstanding Maltese wines. Malta is certainly one of the smallest wine-producing countries in the world. With 800 hectares of vineyards at the very most and wines rarely exported outside the archipelago, its production is a source of intrigue. A trip to these islands is an opportunity to discover a dynamic wine industry, which is growing while reconnecting with its long history.

Accommodations

Malta offers luxury hotels or boutique properties overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, such as The Phoenicia Malta, Iniala Harbour House, Rosselli – AX Privilege, or The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux, the Malta Marriott Hotel and Spa at Balluta Bay, or the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz on Gozo. In addition, there are beautifully appointed villas and rustic farmhouses available for families looking for a quiet retreat in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.
