New England Road Trip

Need a break from the dog-eat-dog corporate world, Zoom calls, traffic jams, fast-paced city life or the same-old/same-old suburbia routine? Perhaps, you’re spending too much time looking at a screen or even worse, the back of a screen that seems to constantly capture the attention of someone you love – your children, a partner or spouse, a friend, et al.

Don’t worry. I’ve got just the thing for you – a Downeast Maine road trip.

Pro-tip: Start in Bar Harbor and make your way down the coast. The day 1 drive is a bear (4 ½ hours from Boston and 8 hours from New York City). Getting that long haul out of the way early will make the trip home so much more enjoyable.

Unfortunately, cell-service is just fine, even in some of the most remote communities along Maine’s rocky shores. However, the natural beauty, charming towns, and occasional glimpse of a lighthouse standing tall above the sea, gradually pulls you away from any other distraction. Before you know it, you’ll understand why “salt-of-the-earth” residents of Downeast Maine work so hard to live so simply. It’s a place where people depend on one another; they’re polite; they talk; and when their long hard workday is done, they relax.

In Bar Harbor, fisherman, farmers, artists, et al share the fruits of their labor to bring you fabulous farm/ocean to table delights as well as hand-crafted keepsake treasures. Set in the backdrop of beautiful Acadia National Park. Scale Cadillac Mountain (FYI – the place where America welcomes the first ray of light at sunrise every morning.) to peer out over the icy cold waters dotted with countless islands inhabited only by deer, seals, puffins, or small communities serviced only by ferry. It’s truly breathtaking.

From there, head south along the coastal roads that hug Penobscot, Casco, and Saco Bays. You’ll begin to notice a tranquil consistent sense of comfort, while simultaneously appreciating the uniqueness of every salty Downeast village and town. And of course, do stop in to any one of Maine’s famous roadside diners and lobster pounds you’ll see along the way. They don’t disappoint.

Trust me… It’s just what the Doctor ordered to cure the hustle and bustle city blues.
